1. Jay Omaro….
You’re the Local R’N’B artist that all
the girls are going crazy for!
You made your debut with the hit song
“The Hunt” …..
Where were you hiding before then? How
did you come to the decision to
start your music career?
Hehe!! Well, I discovered my ability to
sing when I was 12 years old. I started
the piano way before, but when I got to
buy a new keyboard, It became automatic
for me to start composing and writing
songs, which eventually led to me
singing them! I decided to start my
music career when I discovered the
studios where I produce my own material!
I thought they had great local standard,
and I decided to go with a song, and
sing it for the producers there. They
liked what they heard, and I took a
couple of vocal lessons, and started
working on original material after a
month.
2. You write, produce and perform your
own material but which would you
Say gives you the most satisfaction? Or
is it the whole process of
developing your ideas?
The satisfaction derives when you
actually perform the songs and get the
feedback from the audience, or even when
you hear the finished product!!! But
yeah, the whole process is exciting,
because you build into it, and the song
grows with you.
3. After all the hard work that an
artist puts into creating their
material,
Do you think that an artist is really
appreciated locally?
Yep, local artists are very much
appreciated. Unfortunately, this doesn’t
always show when it comes to show
organizers paying the artist.
4. At just 18, you’ve released 4 singles
that have made quite a hit with radio
stations! Your latest release
“Luxuriate” is currently number one and
looks like its becoming a great hit….
I’m curious though, what is ‘Luxuriate’
about?
Luxuriate has a very broad perspective
to it. First of all, I wanted to show
people the real me…I don’t need anything
that could turn into a bad habit, to
make me feel good. Whereas people
luxuriate in alcohol or cigarettes, I
manage to luxuriate with a HOT beat on a
Saturday night! And then of course, it
gets sexy throughout the song. Dancing
tends to get very intimate and physical,
and that’s the drive of the song.
5. According to your myspace page, your
motto is “Screw it, Let’s do it”
Now rumours are that you’re actually
living up to it and leaving the island
What does the future hold for Jay Omaro?
Right. I m trying to plan for once in my
life, since I m not a person who plans
at all! I m considering leaving the
island, not only for career reasons, but
also for a personal change. I feel the
need to be inspired, by meeting
different people and getting familiar
with other cultures. It’s a personal
growth thing. I don’t want to be the
same person for my whole life. That
would be very annoying for me. However,
my vocal trainer tells me: DON’T THINK
OF YOUR COUNTRY AS A CURSE, BUT AS
STEPPING STONE. And I think it’s
correct. I kinda forgot that. Where else
in the world will a relatively new
artist find himself on TV, promoting his
stuff, having material heard on the
radio, like it ain’t a big deal!!! I got
the experience now, and I m ready to
challenge myself further.
6. We wish you the best of luck in all
that you decide to pursue throughout
your career…
Now lastly as a former str2dpoint
resident member, what are your
comments about the programme?
OMG, it’s so boring. Don’t waste another
minute of your time darling!! Of course
I m joking!!! The topic changes every
week, and the subjects chosen are
definitely to the viewer’s interest. The
LIVE atmosphere is even better, coz u
get to interact with the other members,
and hang around with the presenters!!
It’s totally fun, young and fresh, 100%
up-to-date!!!
